Dear Amigos,

To my disbelief, riding home last night my mirror falls off and then hangs by the wire while cruising on the freeway. It looks like the plastics at the joint (between base that screws into the bike and mirror body)  of this expensive X9 500 mirror had gave up. Someone or something must of hit my mirror before and cracked it at the joint. Fortunately, I keep tools in the seat compartment and was able to remove the mirror immediately before the wire snapped.

This mirror was a OEM replacement I bought from the eBay vendor (last year), which janmicheal (Jjprivate) referred me to. I don't want to spend that much again to get another one.

Thus, I wanted to run this by the board to see if it sounds like a good ides or maybe there is some better suggestions. To weld it back together I was thinking I would drill some holes on the base (bottom half) and the top pieice (Mirror), then string nylon-tie-wraps to hold it together. Is this a bad idea?

Thanks

Somewhere here is a fool-proof way of repairing Evo mirrors. Have a Search from the Home Page.

Yes, there is an epoxy/liquid metal fix that leaves the mirror fully functional. I had a mirror fall off when going over a speed bump but in that case the metal tube that screws through other joint failed due to metal fatigue.

Basically glue the broken bit from the top of the stem back into place, then wedge a length of dowel or rubber tube or whatever you have through the central pivot hole that the mirror head slots through, then put some masking tape over the top surface to act as a barrier, finally from inside add a thickness of car body repair fibreglass resin around the tube and blend into the sides to reinforce the repair. Keep it thin around the tube and go thicker towards the sides. Once hardened remove the tube and tape. Sand flat any bulges on the top so the mirror head sits flat and the gap is correct, then refit the spring and nut and it should be stronger than before and still swivel.

Dave, I think the above is worthy of posting in its own (locked) place in the "How to Do" section.

Sorry I didn't look at my mirror after my post. I did do the search and found a link for others to refer to:
http://www.x9ownersclub.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=20628.0

Also I found the new post in the how to section:
http://www.x9ownersclub.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=22665.0

Thanks everyone for the input. I'll give it a shot later this week. I prob need to visit the hardware and auto store for supplies first. While I am at it I think I 'll reinforce my good mirror too.

BTW I am not sure right now without the mirror in front of me, but will this repair allow me to change the signal bulb out if it should burn out ? It sounds like it does...

Cheers all
