The good thing about Carole Nash is that EU-wide recovery and breakdown insurance is included in the price.

Many of us use Carole Nash - but note tht CN has recently become part of the Norwich Union Group.
Not always the cheapest, but one of the better - especially if you travel in Europe.

I think Swinton were basically saying they would rather not insure you when they give such a ridiculous overthetop quote.

To be honest they usually all use the same actual insurance people such as Red Star. If you want just a basic insurance you may as well go for the cheapest - if you want extras such as legal cover/breakdown you may have to look deeper.

That's true, nearly every policy I have had both for cars or bikes is with Equity Red Star regardless of who I bought the policy through. The difference in premium is down to the brokers mark up. Getting the broker to bundle a breakdown cover to seal the deal usually swings it.

If you can get a policy with NIG as the underwriter, grab it! The one time I had to resort to insurance all was sorted by them sending one letter to me, and my taking that to the repairer of my choice. Couldn't have been easier from my POV.

The Red Star allowed me to use my own dealer. Carole Nash take your bike to Altrincham and they deal with repairs - I know which I prefer.

Breakdown cover needs careful looking at. Sometimes the ones bundled are simply roadside pickup to the nearest garage, others will forward you to a destination of your choice. Some use a local recovery within 20 miles of home yet quote an AA/RAC on the policy but that's only when you are on a motorway or more than 20 miles from home. Mines an RAC yet they used a local garage after my accident last year, then again it wasn't a repair I needed just transport home and they were quick arriving. Homestart isn't worth bothering with, after all if you are at home, you aren't stranded without tools. European cover is OK if you travel abroad but again make sure it covers accident/illness recovery not just mechanical breakdown repair. Anything is better than nothing, but the AA/RAC will offer the highest level of cover, but the top option isn't always the one on offer when it comes 'free'. Some policies state a 'bike aware' transport used for recovery which is always a good idea as sometimes the big companies are so 'car' orientated they aren't rigged up to transport bikes.
Red Star also allowed me to quote and repair my own bike and simply paid me a cheque within a month or so of submitting a part list and prices.

I tried AA who found Equity Red Star for me at £110 which includes legal cover for claims and a hire bike while yours is getting repaired. If you are unfortunate enough to be involved in an accident, like I was, this service was well worth having . I am 58, and ride a 500 evo. I have always paid around the 100 quid mark since I was 50 yrs old.( 50 years young, even!) Chris. Edited by Big Ears: New post had been placed within the quote. Now extracted.

Can only say a big thank you for this information from all of you. Also learnt / found out yestreday that if you are in any, yes any Tesco store that has it's own parking and you break down using a vehicle 2 or 4 wheels there-in, customer service will call out the RAC to sort out your break down for free...it's a contract between themselves for the customers !

Dave, I can see why you have RAC: - Nationwide recovery Our Nationwide recovery promise means that we'll transport your vehicle, you and up to seven others to your destination anywhere in the UK Onward travel (Available if you select Nationwide recovery) A replacement car for up to 3 days while yours is being fixed. Or we will provide overnight accommodation or onward travel. I think it is going to be hard to better this, once again thanks for your in-put

I would have no problem with that policy. It is normal to have those named extras where you can chose if you want them or not.
