Didn't know that. Mine was done by the dealer so I better contact them.
Are the heavier ones black too?

No, chrome. And they are quite weighty! had mine off to check the screws were OK (not rusting up).

I'm guessing the purpose is to offset speed wobbles or somesuch caused by the added topbox aerodynamics. But that is a wild guess.

That's correct Mike, they are to compensate for the top box. And they look better than black  ::

OK I did my own thing, got these off eBay -

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/181276846436?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&var=480302297588&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Select M6 x 1mm pitch, 50mm length.

Unfortunately the size is embossed into the top surface of the head so it's not smooth, but still looks much better than rust!!

The original screws appear to be black anodised, which in my experience doesn't survive well outdoors.

Allen key size No. 4. Smear of copper grease on the end of the thread before screwing on. EDIT: or maybe that only applies to aluminium alloy.....

So several months in I have discovered that I am not a lazy git and duly take the top box off every evening, day in day out and no sign of the locking mechanism wearing out.

I am now the proud owner of two Piaggio X10 topboxs if anyone is looking for a cheap one?

You are right about the Carcoon - it is a pfaff to fit, I've used one on my classic car for several years - it does a very good job of protecting the car and circulating air to prevent corrosion - BUT it is a pain to join the two parts together as the body does not bend at 77 like it did at 17!

The stronger 'Outdoor' cover lasted about 6 years before it had to be replaced for £250.

Well blasting along through some roadworks and hit a bump and off came the topbox.  Didn't realise for a few miles until I was on the motorway and a car pulled alongside gesticulating frantically. Wondered what they were on about, glanced behind me and thought (unprintable).  Suffice to say the contents required I contact the police so it was not good.  Then a couple of hours later I got a call to say a road crew had found it! They managed to get into it with a screwdriver causing very little damage.
The box must have hit the deck base down as that is pretty badly scraped, there is a scuff on one corner and the contents were all ok.
So for protection the box is awesome, security not so good. Managed to find a replacement lock barrel, but the postage is 3 times the cost.
Tomorrow I am rearranging my garage so I can get the bike in further and will be bolting the box to the rack.

Sod's Law once again!
Can you determine that the box didn't just come off because it wasn't quite latched home (human error) in which case continuing to use it normally but being extra careful is fine, or can you see where wear or a fracture has happened that may indicate excessive fit and remove does harm?

I have the lock in pieces at the moment and no sign of fracture etc so putting it down to human error, although it was a big bump hit hard.  Garage sorted so no more need to take it it off daily.

I think the lock only prevents manual release, not necessarily locks the actual latch thingy that holds it on.

The key lock is also the release button, locking it just means it can't be pushed in.

So I ordered a lock for a Shad SH50 at great expense (15 euros postage for a 6 euro part) but it's the wrong part.  Going to contact Fowlers for a whole locking mechanism - sigh
