Hi all,

Well, I've switched my commute from Sheffield to Manchester from the geologically slow public transport option to Colin's ex-scooter, which cuts the journey time roughly in half. However, there is one considerable downside (apart from the weather on top of the snake pass): by about half way through the journey, it feels roughly like I'm sitting on a hedgehog-shaped hot coal. That may be a slight exaggeration, but it's pretty uncomfortable. And because I have to make this journey 8-10 times per week, it gets steadily worse. I think the problem has mostly to do with my height (6'6) which means that if I sit forward, there is quite an accute angle between my legs and torso, which forces my sit bones like an arrowhead into the famous 'X9 seat nose'. An hour of 100kg of that is not a lot of fun. However, if I sit back, the slope of the seat is such that I gradually slide forward. However, my trousers do not slide forward, with the ultimate effect that I essentially end up sitting on my testicles. I've been reading around the forum, and noticed a few options - a bagster seat; an airhawk seat mod; several minor civil engineering projects involving plastic welding, metal riveting and such. I found the price of the airhawk seat mod quite scary, and consequently have not worked up the courage to check out the price on the bagster seat yet. However, it occured to me that essentially the whole front portion of the forward seat needs raising so that the dreaded curve starts further back, allowing me to sit further back and providing more padding underneath.

Does anybody have any thoughts about the best solution for my particular case? What have been the most successful/simplest seat mods in the past?

Cheers

I had my seat lowered in the past by a guy in Wyke, Bradford who also did 'comfort seat' conversions at between £100 - £150 if you want to go down that route.

In the meantime I have a gel seat you can give a try out - the biggest problem is fitting it on the seat as it doesn't have a long enough strap to go round and under the wide seats of the X9. If you want to give it a go before you spend any money PM me and I can make arrangements to bring it to the university for you to try for a week or two.

That sounds like a very generous offer. We'll need to work out the logistics of it though - I take it you're in manchester (can't see now I'm writing the reply). Looking at the seat, the required extra padding looks so simple, and yet I can't see a very easy way to get it done. Removing the cover would involve taking the staples out, and I'd be worried about how I could get it back on after that.

To try it out you can strap it onto the top of the seat if we can extend the strapping a bit. I will have a look to see what I can come up with after Tues (I have a funeral to go to then).

I am 10 miles south of Manchester so it isn't a long way and can get there on most days.

Try a different pair of pants. I find that some trousers give me a numb bum other I can ride all day. As you say you slide inside your kegs if they grip the seat or they slide too and I'm not sure which is worst.
I had my seat re-foamed so that the raised hump at the front isn't as raised and the top is rather flatter in harder foam, and also recovered in a grippy sandpaper like vinyl and it feels much better.
The stock foam is rather soft and after a while compresses fully so you feel as if you have no padding at all. A gel pad would help and if you know an upholsterer, if you had it put under the top cover would solve the fitting problem or risking having it nicked.

I had intended on keeping my trousers fairly casual and letting the fairing do its work - might have to revise. I have been wearing cycling shorts of late though - not that it's been doing me a terrific amount of good.

I'm glad you cleared that up. I was imagining all sorts!
