Title: Emissions
Post by: sinky on January 09, 2024, 12:19:54
Hi everybody hope you are well.

I live in Spain and my 2003  x9 200 Evo has to go through a check up ITV / MOT every 2 years.

It's due in about 5 months . The last time I took it it failed. I then have a month to fix then get a free retest.
It passed second time just.

Different examiner.

All I done was removed the air filter and gave it a hard time the morning of the retest.
It is a bit smelly . What can I do to fix this?

It's done 78000 km and maintained by me
It Runs great.
Iv never changed the spark plug for a while?
Should I take it to a proper mechanic for a tune up.  No smoke from the exhaust just a bit fumey . Fuel consumption isn't the best either.

Another 2 year itv would be excellent .
Any help or tips would be appreciated. .

Thanks Paul

When I got my 250SL X9 I put a new spark plug and airfilter in plus coolant change and Goop sealant in the tyre valves as a preventative measure/rim leak stopper.

It's got a carb hasn't it, so just weaken it off a bit, new air filter and plug and make sure it's fully warmed up.

Check and possible replace the air filter and make sure the is nothing blocking the air intake duct.
My X9 125 was very difficult to start but OK when warmed up. The electric choke had failed in the warm engine position. Is it possible, if there is one on yours, that it has failed in the cold engine position?

Thanks guys .Dave . Where's the screw to weaken the carb please. Which way do you turn ? Clockwise anti clockwise ?I know the idle one on the top. Thanks

Not sure but clockwise is usually to weaken. Depending on which carb you have as there are two types, but the screws are in a similar location

or

Note how much you are turning it so you can always go back to how it is now, go a half turn and see if it makes any difference to reliable running, if not try another half turn. If it tends to stall or is hard to start, go back a quarter.
