Title: Went in for new tire, got a bigger problem, who pays?? Post by: freewheel on October 01, 2009, 19:58:43 Took my 2001 X9 Evo in for rear tire (the company has fitted x2 Pirellis in succession, both had a pronounced high spot which caused a worrying wobble when riding) so we went for a Bridgestone. Anyway, after nearly an hour they call me out, and say there's a problem.
I'm not massively technical, so I'd appreciate your thoughts, as tomorrow I suspect it'll be added to the bill, and I want to know if you think there's blame on either side. They showed me the right hand brake caliper hanger (thingy), a large piece of cast aluminium which connects the right hand (offside) of the bike's wheel to the bike, and the brake, and I think the exhaust bolts go into it too. Anyway, they had 2 tiny wiry spirals of metal (helicoils) in their hands, and initially said that it had had a temporary fix that they had fallen foul to. But then, the 2 mechanics had a closer look and pronounced that in their opinion the helicoils were in fact original fitment. They said that in doing this, the third tire, in close succession, it has caused them to come out. :headbang: They then said that the piece would need to be re-coiled/machined tomorrow and offered to drop me home. So, my question is, who's going to pay for this repair? Has this happened to anyone else? Any advice? Cheers, Tim Title: Re: Went in for new tire, got a bigger problem, who pays?? Post by: Dave Milnes on October 01, 2009, 21:03:11 On my old 250 the threads were cut directly in the alloy.
Helicoils would never have been fitted new, a proper steel plug would be pressed into an oversize hole and drilled and threaded if it was deemed the alloy to be too weak. Sounds like it's had the bolts overtightened previously and as this part is now unavailable to buy new, it's been 'fettled'. |
