2001 250sl belt change. In the absence of a locking tool for the variator,is it possible(without causing damage!) to use an impact gun to crack the nut? Thanks

Definitely, do not try wedging or bodging it or you risk bening the shaft with consequential vibrations and noise.
Air gun or electric work well but the first time can be quite tight! Keep persevering.

I use a 12v impact gun, thats used for car wheels.

Its got power to remove the 250SL nut and put it back on with enough strength to keep it there, iv used this way on every belt change on my X9 and works fine.
