Just took delivery of a used original rack for my X9 250, I always put a rack on my bikes, just makes it more useful so ride it more etc, these days when I have a works van, wife with a car etc etc any trip I can do on the bike I will.

This original rack is the proper job, I have seen and fitted many racks on bikes, I can imagine the suspension bottoming out before this breaks.

Nice and easy to fit too only 10 mins.

And it also looks good without a box fitted, like a rear spoiler! Beats the 'Givi' (other brands are available)bolt on accessory appearance.
The OEM boxes are built like the proverbial brick S***house as well, only the moulded hinges being the weakest link.
Grease all the bolts when fitting, especially the two vertical ones down the rear tubes as if they sieze up it's a sod to remove.
Also do the rear brake light panel tab mod or you can't get the panel off to get to the battery.
Leave the panel off until after the rack is bolted on then snip the 4 tabs just enough that the panel can, with a bit of force, snapped into place then just put the 2 self tappers in above the latch to hold it. Dont bother with the 2 vertical bolts on the top or you have to strip off the rack covers to get to them.

Ah yes I see what you mean about the vertical bolts, didn't read this until I'd put the rack on.

The bolts that came out had rust on so yes I greased those up on re-assembly.

On the look out for a large cheap box now, there are some 51 litre jobbies online for £25 delivered, I had a cheap one before and it never gave me any issues I was surprised.

I had, still have, one and the box is fine but the adaptor plate is rubbish, mine broke. On the X9 you are better drilling 4 holes and fit a plate or use large washers on the inside and bolt it on like the OEM box.
Original boxes with good hinges and a lock that works are quite rare.

I just bought a £30 special off eBay and bolted the supplied plate to the rack, using some plywood to fill the void underneath.
