I seem to be collecting X9s!!!!

« on: November 27, 2017, 09:32:38 »

Yesterday I stripped down the Evo to replace the temp sensor and, while it was naked, I thought I would check the belt for wear as it has done close on 8K.
I did the recommended width measurement which was fine 25.76mm and was about to put everything back together when I noticed this:

I quickly removed the belt and examined it further:

Looks like it was likely to snap at the next fast overtake I do.

All I have to do now, is fit new clutch shoes as mine are definitely is definitely spelled definitely past there sell by date. I have a feeling the springs have weekened and have caused premature wear.
Now, how do I split the clutch?

That almost looks like damage rather than wear, as if an object has been wedged in the tooth and ripped it. It could be a manufacturing defect too. None of the belts I have ever taken off have shown any sign of stress which is why I have been steadily extending the mileage to almost double the book figure.

Not too sure Dave, it was an OEM belt from Italy, the supplier I think you use and recommended.
I think I do put my belts through a fair bit with my riding style.
Also, the flapper wheel had all but stopped turning so whether that has made any difference.

Just glad I spotted it when I did as I don't fancy one going when I am hurtling through the countryside at 4 in the morning.

I have to agree, the problem is, I rack up the miles so quickly, even using both bikes, the belt changes come around without me realising.

I think that this belt has probably worn quickly because:

The flapper wheel had all but seized.
I noticed a while back that the air intake for the belt was somewhat blocked with country debris.

These two factors have caused everything to run hotter than normal and that together with a couple of long several hour ride outs has done for the belt.

I will however keep a closer eye in future.

Love it when a plan comes together!:

My homemade clutch compressing tool worked a treat and I now have a new clutch (5 shoe variety), a new flapper wheel bearing and a new belt.

Need to take it for a run and check everything over but at least with the new clutch I have lost that idle jingle from the backing plate. Will be interesting to see how many miles it does before the jingle reappears or whether the upgraded 5 shoe clutch doesn't suffer from it.
