My 12 year old front tyre needs replacing and was wondering if anyone has used a Dunlop Scootline SX01, if they have what are they like. I ride all year round so need a good all round tyre. I have got a Maxxis on the back but by experience I know they don't last long. So if the Dunlop is any good will replace the Maxxis with one when it's wore out.

As I have not heard of this tyre before, I have taken a look on the Dunlop site and would appear that they do not do the sizes for the X9 range. That includes all the variant engines and tyre sizes.

I could be wrong Steve but that is according to their own web page.

Seems it does exist on mytires.co.uk
Strange Dunlop don't list it , That would be enough for me not to buy one
If they don't care enough to show it off on thier homepage.

How strange! Dunlop obviously need to update their own site.

Thanks guys that is interesting as it is advertised on the VE website, has anyone used any of these makes then Avon, Continental, Pirelli. I know a lot of you swear by Michelin but I am not a fan.

The Pirelli GTS are very good as are the Diablos. Dunlops are OK.
Avon and Continentla grip well but don't give the mileage. Very soft compounds.
For best compromise between longevity and grip look for the ones described as touring or dual compound design. Otherwise they wear down the centre and the handling goes all odd.

Something else to watch for is whether the same supplier can do both front and rear in the same tyre. It's not unusual to find they stock a front, but not a matching rear or vice versa.

I THINK it's the other way around  they may well be last stock of an old design, given the date on this thread relating to them ..... http://www.silverwing600.com/t48-dunlop-scootline-sx01-tires ..... the first post was December 2008,read down & he says the fronts are still on 8000 miles after the rears were changed.

Just ordered a Pirelli EVO21 off  EBay for £56 including p&p. Thanks for help with this, always had bikes and used Continental on them.

That is as close to the OEM fitting for a 250SL as you can get today and should suit it well.

I'm going to buy a tyre fitting machine soon so will buy and stock tyres for my bikes when I see them on offer! Not sure whether to splash out on a fully automatic or a manual and a balancer.

Dave,

You will probably need Security Clearance to buy a wheel balancing machine.
They don't allow any Tom,Dick or Harry to stick those MI5 bugging devices on you know!! ::

I fitted my tyre Friday, now I have got the hang of breaking the bead I find them fairly easy to replace. I haven't got a balancing machine, I just put the dot that is on the tyre next to the valve. Took it for a run, no wobbles or weaving and that was at speeds up to 70mph. It seems to be a good tyre only time will tell.

Front tyres are easy to break the bead and lever off, I've done it, but try doing a rear on a 500! The bead steadfastly refuses to budge without a properly shaped steel press shoe. The tyre just crushes by any other means (big woodworking vise). Remarkable since the rim seal leaks air but the tyre is so firmly embedded!

I had no trouble with the rear tyre either, if you have a quick search on youtube there are some good videos showing how to do it with some wood. I can vouch that it works and is very easy. The only trouble i have is getting the last bit of bead back on as my rim protectors tend to fall inside the tyre, Think i need to tie them together somehow. Also finding tyre pumps are rubbish and the cheap electric ones are not powerful enough, I use a push bike stirrup pump from Halfords. It soon inflates it and gets the bead seated.
