Just checked out the Liftmaster and it allows you to set the required torque, as well as being rated at 350 Nm.  It is still a 12V socket/battery device with a 4metre cord and with shipping 38.49.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Liftmaster-Impact-Digital-Display-Configuration/dp/B0036YHBMM/ref=reg_hu-rd_add_1_dp

Sorry for the thread hijack but we were discussing Impact Wrenches as part of this a little while back and I now need to make a decision/purchase.  I need to change the belt/rollers on the Honda SH125 and have a quandry, that's code for "help please Dave!"

Having checked the Haynes, the torque value for the 19mm nut is only 59Nm and the Liftmaster with adjustable Torque setting only has a range of 80 to 350Nm.

So the question is, if I buy and use this and have it set at 80Nm how likely is it to do any damage when it should only be 59Nm?

The cheaper options (Clarke & Max-Pro) have no adjustment and are rated as "up to 170Nm", so I'm thinking a little too dangerous to risk.

The torque of 59Nm will probably be with the variator fixed by a locking device, so all torque is directly onto the nut.
Using an impact wrench with the variator free to spin, a lot of the torque is lost. If you take the plug out so the motor turns freely, even more of the torque will be absorbed.
Using an impact gut at 80Nm and stop as soon as the shaft turns will probably be fine. Keeping it on and knocking the nut round will definitely over tighten it.
Is the Honda locking tool expensive to buy and do it with a normal torque wrench?

Actually with the spark plug out, see how easy the gun removes the nut. If it struggles, increase the setting until it budges it, and that gives you an idea how much torque is lost by the turning of the shaft. Whatever setting the gun needs to undo the nut with a free spinning engine is what it needs to replace it.

Just rang Firstline Honda who said you'll wait weeks it's about 60 pounds and most people just use an impact wrench!

The bonus is the wrench would be useful to have for other things, but clearly I could just attempt to make a holding tool and as you say use a (borrowed) torque wrench.

That is the same impact wrench that I bought and it did a very good job on the 500, at 160Nm though.

If you make a holding tool make sure it supports the shaft solidly otherwise some of the leverage applied bends the shaft. This probably doesn't stay permanent, it's just flexing, but it loads the oil seal and any bending of what is actually the crankshaft, is best avoided. If you look at the genuine Piaggio 500 tool, it supports the variator by locking it to the engine casing in two places so the high torque doesn't flex the crankshaft.
That's why those cheap holding tools that just wedge the variator are not a good idea.

I made this for my Silver Wing ..
.. bit of flat steel, big hole for socket, two bolt holes for fly wheel & two bolt holes to fix it to the casing using long bolts & spacer tubes.
Made pretty & lighter also machined stand offs finished item looks like ..

Anyone near me (Telford) with some time to spare on a weekday & fancies seeing if it will fit X9 & if not then modify the design so it does, then get a drawing with dimensions post in here ?

That looks like a very good piece of work.
Bob's the nearest to you also in Telford. Maybe between you, you can work something out.

Cheers Dave

If Bob has anytime available during the day I'm sure that something can be designed along the same lines that can be made by any member with a hacksaw & drill

Good idea Bern but which X9 were you thinking of modifying it too?
The 125 and 250 evo's don't have holes in the pulley so use a locking tool around the starter ring teeth.
The 500's have square cut outs in the centre ring rather than holes in the pulley, a tool could be made from some tube steel filed down leaving the square teeth then welded to a similar length of bar but it would not be as simple as yours.
That leaves the 250 Honda's and I have already posted a design for a locking tool for them with dimensions:
http://www.x9ownersclub.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=21251.0.

Where in Telford are you anyway?

The 500 would be the obvious candidate as it's the least easy to get the nut off.

Hi Bob,like that tool for the 250 if I had seen it earlier the same basic design would have worked for the S'wing,500 sounds like an interesting project,I am home during the day most weekdays,I'm in Wellington between The Wickets & The Buckatree

Hi Dave, yep 500 seems the one to go at & try to design some thing that can be made by most people with a basic toolkit (hacksaw, vice, drill, etc),initial thought is a flat plate with a big hole then drill & tap for the locating pins (file the thread off to form the locating/holding pin) then long bolts & spacers to fix to the casing.
