The only problem with impact wrenches is not knowing the torque accurately if at all.
I doubt any would actually overtighten considering the stupidly high book torque figure given. You could only achieve this with a seriously meaty locking tool and a bar 4 foot long!!
My cheapo air power tool has three settings, so I tighten initially on No2 then nip up on No1 and undo on No1. It has never come loose and will undo with not too much perseverance. The nuts always seem tighter when trying to remove them, than they are when you initially fit them.
It's always a nightmare getting the nuts off for the first time.

Thanks Dave.

So as Bob says this is a wiser purchase than the Buzetti tool, or is it recommended to have both.  Just checking that an impact wrench should mean that a holding tool is superfluous?

Yes the impact wrench thumps the nuts round without you needing to clamp anything.
Just hold the rear brake on for the clutch centre nut, and the compression is enough to resist against the front nut.
I have no idea whether a 12V gun will generate enough torque but I think Jim had such a device and it worked OK. Mines is air powered and cost about £25 and I give it the full 175psi and the nuts are very little problem.

Well according to an Auto Express group test, this little thingumie is the best all-round buy with value in mind.  Did some searches and seen plenty of forum posts (mainly cars) from happy owners.

No need for air or mains electric and gotta be worth a punt I suspect?

Nice one and i think i remember these been mentioned in the past elsewhere, would be even better with a clarke vat free promo.

Was thinking what machine mart did.

Mind since this is on the scoot i would not like to use the scoots power so you would be looking at needing a spare car battery to power it.

Not sure for the 20 seconds it'll be needed that there's a need to worry about running of a 12V socket or from the battery via clips - but there again I don't have first-hand experience.

Any thoughts Dave?

Clarke stuff is pretty good at the price.
Once cracked off the torque should be adequate for future use but if it is the first time the nut's been off it's marginal on the torque. The variator nut is 175Nm this device is 170Nm but the reviews are all good.
Worth a punt.

What about concerns running it from a scoot's battery, would this drain a battery easily, woudn't have thought it?

Cheers

Should be OK as it isn't running for long. No worse than using the electric centre stand.

It looks like you can get cordless impact wrenches that are 12v and have a 3Ah battery so the X9 one should have no problems powering such a device. I also note that Amazon has a Liftmaster impact wrench that is much higher than 175Nm for £35.

Thanks Julian.

Just checked out the Liftmaster and it allows you to set the required torque, as well as being rated at 350 Nm.  It is still a 12V socket/battery device with a 4metre cord and with shipping 38.49.

Remember to let go of the trigger, I started using one, removed my sump plug on the car and dumped most of the oil over the drive, before I could get a container under the car . Use with care, once loose the bolt unwinds very quickly.

Oh Bum...

Trashed the scoot last night coming from work, hit gravel mound round a corner.

Speed about 40mph on approach.

Ended up on the traffic island furniture.

engine still running fuel pouring out tried to stand her up and ended up dropping on other side so smashing off the other mirror.

Got her stood after snapping off part of the centre stand.

Drove her the 8 mile home or so then the full pain from the leg lacerations started in earnest and the slight possibility of some break in foot as i was finally unable to stand on it.

So my good lady wife cleaned up the wounds some to asses the damage gave some pain relief and dressed it for taking me to the hospital.

Yes My wife is indeed a nurse, A&E nurse in fact... So a fair few questions when she turned back up at work.... ::::

Well today i need to take off work but need to be back tomorrow for job interview in hope to get off the agency and on there books even if its on same pay for probation period.

So much for never been absent im absent for the day before the interview.... DOH...

well i had intended to get the old honda x9 250 fit and sold on but looks like i will be trying to see how many panels actually fit the 500 evo.

Can post pic of the leg straight after the crash if its not viewed as been inappropriate.

Viewed through trouser leg hole....

Oh X-ray showed no break thankfully.

Glad you survived with relatively minor injuries, the tupperware can be replaced.

The gravel mound, was it an accumulation from winter?

Or had it been offloaded for a specific purpose. If it was on the highway it should have been coned off, road works sign or something to tell you it was there if not you may have a claim

Think it had been a spill from the spread pattern not a huge pile or that may well have simply stopped me.

Lost all traction on a couple of inches spread over a largish area.

Could have been a lot worse especially if the island light bollard had not been there it would have been the steel post that stopped the bike and possibly me but i missed the post by a couple of foot as i went.

Well here are some pics.

The handle bars are a little off canter as force of impact must have twisted them when they hit the steering stop before actually shearing the stop.

Time to get spending on Ebay. All main fairing and the grey unpainted panels will fit from any X9, and the rear painted ones and v-panel will fit from any model Evo, so not difficult to source, but the usual footboards on Ebay are often slightly damaged due to a fall and may need to be bought new. Tunnel top is common as are the handlebar covers but the glovebox on the Evo has the seat open button recess the earlier ones don't. I wouldn't bother about the tranny cover until next belt service.
Buy any colours and once you have a full set paint then a colour of your choice.

Dave the V panel you mention i take it that this is the panel in the fairing?

The one from the honda 250 is what i had fitted anyway the only issue i would see with the V panel is is someone was using the original mirrors possibly.

So the evo rear panels why are they different to the others?

Are they a deeper shoulder?

I see the TNT replacement bodywork at £202 looks well but only small picture and looks like teh fairing although nice does not allow the fitting of indicators in place of the air scoops.

Quality may not be up to usual standard also and actually dont like the hole they have placed either side of the mudguard.

Certainly looks like i will be painting her white sooner than i thought.

The upper rear sides are sculpted differently on the Evo as is the battery cover but the old SL ones will physically fit but you would need to keep them in matching pairs.
The main fairing is identical on all models and years but to use Evo mirrors you need the matching vee-panel as again it is sculped to flow into the base of the mirror stems. You can use the older panel but only with SL type mirrors.
The TNT panels will fit any X9 and I think, look really nice having even more agressive styling and a wider range of colours. Probably a cheaper option than even used panels all having to be prepped and resprayed. I'm sure someone on here a long time ago bought a 250SL fitted with them and it had the normal fairing indicators, so I think they will fit.

Thanks Dave, the battery cover i had used of the sl for the silver stripe look down the scoot.

That was exactly my feeling about the centre fairing panel the sl mirrors fit fine with the sl centre on the evo as i did but now the mirrors are snapped off.

Interesting about the TNT as the small image makes the air scoops look bigger and not shaped properly for the indicators of the sl to fit.

Only blue or silver kit shown on the well known parts place that i cannot remember the name of.... remember now aj suttons.... ::

Dont have issue with not having seat release button as i never used it, not even sure if it worked.

Always opened with glove box lever or mostly the remote.

Pics didnt work so wont even put that back on.

Probably will transfer all of the 250 sl for speed.

Possibly take time getting other bits as wanted to go white with her and so she should wear the non matched panels im likely to get.

Could not find any better pics or other suppliers of the tnt panels as would be good to see a scoot with them on.

Oh the headlight backing is cracked and the lower mount snapped off, so looks like i really do need to get the sl lights wired up for the evo.
