Sounds like the 250 cannister is totally different so the foam will be fine, just not suitable for a 500.
As for oiling the foam, it depends on the foam. Some foams will be adversely affected by oil as it slowly perishes them but others will be designed to be lightly oiled. Was there no instructions with it? If not and you don't believe the seller, try the manufacturers website.

Took the 500 out today after doing oil and filter change and replacing the full beam bulb as the pins had corroded and came away with the connector.

Forks upped to 250ml of oil but think a little too firm.

I must find out how to bypass the darn center stand buzzer....

New seal and clamp fitted to exhaust thought perhaps some exhaust gasses coming out but pretty sure its what i thought it could be and was the copper slip i had put on the thread of the bolt burning off... plus it was very very cold outside.

Tried out the body mate apron, the one you wear rather than the scoot wears.

Had hoped it would save on wearing waterproof trousers and around town its fine but on the motorway it lifts unless you sit on it and thats would be a faff.

Waiting on the ultraseal to arrive to see if that sorts the front tyre slow leak.

Been laid off all week with agency so no money hope were back in tomorrow and hope the snow keeps of for the scoot commute in.

Still not got to look where the buzzer for the stand is nor looked into why only the throttle grip is heated.

When the Ultraseal is in ride the bike for a couple of days to make sure the stuff gets spread around inside. Don't expect it to seal rim or valve seat leaks straight away.

Well heard what i thought was something catching on the rear wheel.

Thought perhaps the valve extension but next day pillion even heard a loud clicking, after the motorway run.

Sounded like pads rattling but plenty of meat on the pads, so on center stand and soon realised wheel loose again....Darn nab it...

Hving looked online it seams my rear wheel is missing the nut cover cap possibly the small spacer also.

Anyone know the Nut size and pitch?

M18? M24? 1.25 pitch?

Thinking of getting a castellion nut.

If you need the spacer, order the proper parts from Suttons.
Another thought is some dipstick owners put both spacers on the shaft behind the arm!!!
Why?
THe cone shaped one is all that goes on wide end to the hub, then the arm, then the straight spacer, nut, retaining cover and big split pin. It never budges when correctly fitted.

Will see about ordering a few bits from suttons as a bit much just for the cover, in that postage will outstrip cost of teh nut cover.

Suspect it may have been when the tyres were changed by previous owner as expect they were removed and then taken in.

I would as tends to be free fitting on loose wheels.

Would much prefer a castellated nut on mind.

Decided to try local old style bike spares shop old bloke given it over to Son in law i think.

Anyway we tried to get a castellated nut for the X9 500 but no joy as its M16 x 1.25 pitch.

Oh it does seam as though the old owner of the scoot has put the spacer behind the frame arm.

Any way the i can see why piaggio do the nut cover, as they created a darn daft thread size and pitch.

Standard bolts only use 1.25 pitch upto 8mm or even 10mm.

Motorcycles use 1.25 pitch right upto 12 and 14mm.

However piaggio in there wisdom decided to do as i say 16mm in 1.25 pitch.

The reason for the nut cap is that it gives a much finer increment than a normal 6 sided nut therefore not forcing you to overtighten or loosen off the nut once the correct torque was applied in order to fit the split pin. Where ever the nut stops the cap will have a position that matches the hole for the pin.
If both spacers were meant to go together, surely just one spacer as big as both together would have been used. It's obvious from a basic engineering principle that they go in separated positions.

But so often we hear that they are put together, and not always by DIYers!!!

Thanks gents and did see how how the nut cover does mean its easier to put a pin in than lining up the cut outs in a castelated nut.

But the availability of such a cheap part is daft especially when you see an online listing and they say sold out.

On a side note is it still OEM belts thats rated the best for the 500?

Or are there cheaper options that are as good?

Thanks as ever people...

Oh decided i would sooner try and fit a spidermax back rest to the givi plate rather than purchase a pad for the box.

I know i do seam to insist on making work for myself....

Experience on the forum always points to OEM belts being far better value-for-money than any others.

Not half! How do you propose to open the seat with a backrest bolted in front of the box?
The Piaggio back rest fits to the same mounting points on the frame as the rack, so it's an either/or and not both. The seat only just clears the bottom edge of the standard pad attached to the box, and I wouldn't move the box further backwards.

OOOps i did, Works a treat must get some pics for you folks.

The rest is great well so the pillion thinks.... ::

Even lined up with holes in the universal plate... Sweet.

So can have backrest even with box off...

Gave the rack a good rub down and spray also.

Well chuffed with the backrest although i wont be using it myself.... I dont have long enough arms if i tried but did have a sit on the back and is very nice.

Well on another point got the nut cover and the resin based lock thread the local bike parts shop had put on while waiting for the part was still holding the nut on fast, unlike the loctite ( my But ) thread did.

Having looked about the web has anyone had experience with PSN Tuning and there service pack, as there kit seams good value with the official belt plug rollers and filter?

The front tyre air loss is still there but i check regular and does seam less loss over a longer time now.

Thanks as ever folks.... oh.... whats best place and price for official locking tool to doing the belt and rollers?

Don't think it is needed if you use a 12v impact wrench. Several threads on here.

I think the Buzetti one sold on Ebay by Welsh Scooter Parts is the cheapest variator holding tool.

Thanks folks, and an impact gun would be great but cant see a 12v one been up to much.

Only see upto 250cc Evo, any difference to the 250 and 500?

I do stand to be corrected mind, the box was only moved back about an Inch if that but that has given loads of clearance to the back rest and seat.

Would have only been border line if left where it was but that would have meant drilling the back rest plate and this way all holes line up.

Really must get some pics done.

It would appear Welsh Scooter parts do not have any at the moment and I cannot find them on Suttons or anywhere else on ebay either. Looks like the only place selling these at the moment is easyparts:
http://www.easyparts.nl/showarticles_info/01385446/0-4016-3-31-1281/Blokkeersleutel_Startkrans_Piaggio_500-4t_buzzetti_5446.html

Looks like they have to order them from Buzetti and will take a few weeks to get!

As I will also be needing a 500 variator tool in the future, I have just looked on ebay at the wrenches, loads of these available at this sort of price:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Professional-24V-Cordless-Impact-Wrench-Driver-Power-with-2-Battery-Tool-NEW-/120843848396?pt=UK_Home_Garden_PowerTools_SM&hash=item1c22dacacc
Might be worth considering as they would have more than 1 use for barely double the cost of the holding tool which doesn't.

Not that I've ever yet had a go at the variator, but did I not see comments that using an impact wrench was dangerous (perhaps only for re-tightening) as it can put undue stress on the components.

Or is it just a matter of being careful rather than ham-fisted (like me!)
