The XEvo gave me a surprise today by cutting out as I was twisting the throttle before pulling away from a set of traffic lights on a dual carriageway. It restarted instantly and then was fine all the way home, however it did worry me a bit.

It clicked over 4500 miles exactly on the way home and it's never played up in any way before. I did happen to think something sounded a bit odd as I sat at that traffic light as I could hear a sort of ticking sound. However I didn't know if it was the scoot or the cars around me. At the next set of traffic lights and all the rest of the way home it was fine and I didn't hear the ticking noise.

It was getting towards having the fuel light come on at the time, and I filled up a few miles later. I have noticed that the plastic around the filler cap is looking like it's been cross threaded and little bits are coming away, I wondered if this could have caused it.

Any ideas?

Can't be much or it wouldn't restart so eagerly. I doubt low fuel would be an issue and unless it repeats the problem it's almost impossible to say what it was.
Maybe it simply inhaled that manifold nut Palmers (allegedly) left in the air filter box?

!!!

You're right it probably wasn't anything too bad, it's just that its never done that before, not even when left ticking over after just starting in the morning. Paranoia possibly but it's one of the things that Kev had wrong on his XEvo apparently , but it did it more than once. Still to get to 4500 miles in less than 6 months without causing a single shred of trouble is pretty good for a Piaggio if recent stories are anything to go by!

All my autos (except maybe my Zip) have cut out on opening the throttle at lights at one time or another.

OK it's fairly normal then, that's fine. I just don't think it ever happened to me on the X8 or the Leo, but then I guess I've done double the mileage on the XEvo already that I did in the entire time I had the Leo, and I've increased since I had the X8 too as I'm not taking the car to work at all whereas I used to take the car to work at least 1 time a week due to dance lessons etc that I'm not doing now.

I guess it's just a "use" thing then.

If, I was you, I would check the spark plug cap is tight and treat it to one of these anyway.
http://www.ngksparkplugs.com/products/spark_plugs/iridiumix.asp, it will improve it.

Thanks for the tip. I'll have a look....I'm not sure which inspection cover is over the spark plug... RH side I think. EDIT: Nope it was left hand side.

All looked fine to me, I was quite impressed with how substantial it looked.

I'll keep an eye on it and mention it to cheeky at the service, unless it becomes a big problem before then.

This exact issue has started to rear its head on my Xevo 400... and it's recurring... come to a stop at traffic lights... engine at low revs and when green unless I open the throttle gently she dies... I've been reading a lot on the forum and some were suggesting battery/voltage issues so I've put her on the Optimate. Will change the spark plug if that doesn't sort it but was wondering if anyone has any other ideas other than a faulty plug lead ?

If (and I do mean "IF") it's the same problem the X10 330's had then it's the spark plug cable. When this 1st happened to me the mechanic wrapped electrical tape around the cable and connectors for a "quick fix". About a year later (2013) the changed out the part for a new-improved upgrade.

Replaced the spark plug with an iridium just to see if it was just that - old one looked a bit black at the head and hey presto blazed back into life... didn't want to risk it for the work commute tomorow so will give it a proper test at the weekend ...

Did a 12k test run... purrs beautifully now... put a new Malossi air filter in while I was at it... will be curious to see how the fuel consumption compares.

Must be an issue with the spark quality then. Either dud plug, high resistance lead or a weak coil. Iridium flash point is lower so puts less strain on the lead and coil so it might have cured the symptoms but not fixed the problem. You can use a car lead from an auto spares where they sell them in different lengths and you look up your car and select the right ones off a rack. For a bike just go off the original one and avoid those with screw on plug caps, go for the moulded type.

Both cable and plug should have sorted it then. 15,000miles is probably over the safe limit for a standard copper plug.

Right less than 2 months later I've got another problem - perhaps related - tried to start her yesterday and she started clicking - gave her a bit of break and she started. Put her on the Optimate last night and this morning nothing but the dreaded rapid buzzing/clicking. So thought dud battery - what I did find strange was when I tried to jump start with the car it also SOMETIMES clicks (I tried a few times as I was surprised). I've been on the web and would replace the relay happily - have a few spares from the Xevo 250 - but it seems the one on the Xevo 400 is an entirely different matter and has it's own local 30A fuse: http://www.ebay.de/itm/Piaggio-Xevo-400-ie-2007-2011-Starter-Relay-Each-/112275486756?hash=item1a2423f824:g:0KcAAOSwUp1Y4tTY

I've got the workshop manual - the only 30A fuse it mentions is under the seat - where the rest of them sit. Any good ideas lads ?? thank you

If that link is to a correct relay, then it looks very much like what is used on the 250SL and 500SL/Evo models of X9 and not unlike the one Honda use on a lot of their bikes too. You should be able to pick one up for not much money off UK Ebay. Look for the personal breakers rather than the professionals. There is a newer design used on the very last X9's which has a circular body rather than square. This too should do the job.
Put the battery on a proper charger off the bike rather than an Optimate. They are useless at getting a properly flat battery back up to a meaningful charge then if the relay still flutters you know for sure it's the relay. These relays are pretty solid items though and rarely fail.

Ok did a bit more digging - there are two starter relays on the bike - one in the front and one in the back next to the rear side fairing :

https://www.easyparts.nl/showdrawing/10342/91870/713B/0-4019-1-m420-m2451-m12420-m10342-s10349-d91870/Remote-control-switches---Battery---Horn.html

Numbers 7 & 15 from the cutout - naturally enough they're both a pain in the arse to get at. I tried to start the bike again from a car's 12V and no dice so I'm convinced there's more afoot.

Just went out now and again tried it off the car battery - it's that rear relay that is making all the racket - wonder if the 30A fuse has blown there.

Took off the right fairing panel to get at the relay - replaced the 30A fuse (there are actually two very close together - did em both although both looked fine) - no change - starting to think it might be the relay at the front of the bike behind the cover that might be the problem... have ordered both relays just to be sure. Love these bikes but they are an absolute heart breaker sometimes...

If the front relay isn't breaking then it will flatten the battery in no time so may well be why the rear starter solenoid chatters as the battery really is flat. Also if it's not making good contact it may be why the bike dies. The Italians love to daisy chain relays where one relay triggers another as well as a few circuits. This makes troubleshooting difficult.

So changed it all and tried every configuration - no result - asked a more knowledgeable friend - and the starter motor is screwed.... anyone know how much tupperware I have to remove to replace that ?? thank you.
