Author Topic: X8 125cc Battery, how long should it last whilst being stood  (Read 8465 times)

Hi again

My X8 125cc is stored outside, and with winter now here... how long should the battery be OK to be stood, presuming it is A.O.K??

I will only be using it 3/4 times a month.

What do you seasoned scooter folk do with yours??

A lot depends on the condition of the battery but I would find a way to hook it up to a trickle charger such as an Optimate and that way you will guarantee it starts when you need it.

125 battery capacity is less than ideal in the first place but even so, a well charged one standing unused should last  for a week or even two as long as the useage between is sufficient to give it a full boost again and not just a quick half mile run.
My 500 stands for sometimes two months and fires up no problem, and the Tmax is the same despite only being a 9amp battery like the X9 125.
A lot of people like to use battery tenders like the Optimate but if like me your bike stands outdoors with no power supply it isn't feasible anyway, although I find it unnecessary. My bikes are used daily so when I swap over from one to the other every two or three months, they go away in full running condition not half discharged in the first place.
My original X9 battery lasted 5 years and only went on a charger twice when I accidentally flattened it!

Started the scoot up today...as I needed to get the Fish & Chip shop!.... well tried to! As you have guessed the battery must be flat.

The dashboard lights, and so does the headlamp, but there is not turning over.

The current battery is a 'Turbo' made by Yuasa.
I've now removed the battery, and the levels look good.

I have a multimeter but it's in my motorhome, so will be a few days until I get it.

I don't suppose it could be anything other than the battery could it?\

Can you bump start scooters?

Is it likely this battery is goosed or just needs a charge?

Sorry for all the questions.

Probably the battery, sounds like what was happening to mine before I replaced it if it stood for a week or so.

You can't bump start a scooter because of the auto clutch. I have jump started mine though from my car- but obviously only if it's 12V... not sure what the 125 is.

12V.
The 'chip shop' run is just the type of short trip which doesn't replace what is used and will after a few days result in a non-starter. A battery tender will be needed if these are the only type of uses you regularly do. A good 5 mile run is really needed to keep the battery in good shape without other intervention, especially with the always on headlights as you cannot lower the power usage to give the generator half a chance.

Thought this might make you laugh... hahahaa

Optimate 4 [very impressed with it] arrived, battery on charge it did need a charge, and after leaving it overnight, it showed the green signal meaning A.O.K.

Went to fit it to bike... seat is central locked... battery in my hand;-)
Phone dealer, who say look in petrol filler...
Spend 5 mins remembering how to fuel up... Only done it once!
Get into 'boot' grapple with catch, manage to dislodge red plastic thing on catch.
Fix catch, slide battery in, wire in charger loom and cables.

Sit on bike, hit the button... NOTHING!

Scratch my head for a few minutes.

Any ideas! you'll kick yourself... not as much as me having spent £40 on charger!

It was the red 'run' switch near the throttle... if was on OFF!

doh!

It does start easier now though.

hahahaah

Take off top box, flip up rack

I know someone who's bike wouldn't start ........ because the side stand was still down.

But then again. I called the AA to assitst me with a hire car that wouldn't start.   I'd left it in PARK!!!!

My Merc won't start unless it's in park or neutral.

D'OH!!

Oh well. Couple of times that's caught me out too, usually because the seat sometimes switches it to off when you put the seat up.

Optimate will be useful though in the future so not a complete waste of money!

Another daft optimate question... [as the instructions are poor]

Should I leave this plugged in 24/7? Or just every couple of weeks or so?

Also I know I shouldn't talk about CARS whilst here... but will this charger be OK for my car battery?

Not sure about the 'car' question but the Optimate is designed to be left connected for as long as you want.

Yes, the Optimate can be used on car batteries as well.
