Doing it this way is simply not doing the job properly. The whole idea is to clean out the dust, examine the rollers, and in some instances, re-grease them. If you paid a dealer to do a proper belt replacement and they did it by this method you would consider yourself to be ripped off I'm sure.
The X9 500 can't be done this way as on the SL there is a bridge bearing support over the clutch which has to be removed to get the belt off the rear pulley. There is also only about 8mm between outer edge of the variator and the casing.
To shortcut doing a job properly for the sake of undoing two nuts seems hardly worth it, considering the bulk of the work is actually getting the casing half off.
It may be a good way for the chavs on their pimped up runners to avoid having to buy a tool or two, but it isn't the way to treat a bike you need to rely on daily.

It's not possible on any X9, not just the 500's.  For a roadside mend on some 50cc machines it might be feasible.
