If you still need to adjust the preload on the rear shock I would not suggest a C Spanner. The metal rings are typical Italian Alloy and very prone to cracking when old. Use the spanner and lever method to lift the spring off the ring and the rotate by hand.

Thank you for the top tip Bob.

I haven't done anything with them yet, as I've been spraying them with various fluids before I actually tackled them.

Well yesterday, I had the starter solenoid fail.

Started off at the house ok, but a quick stop at the petrol station and it wouldn't restart. I could hear the solenoid click in response to the starter button, but no motor action.

Bridged the starter terminals of the solenoid with a spanner and it fired up okay.

I don't see any markings on it, probably replaced before.

Looked up Fowlers, 1D001697R supercedes 582906, €65.73

Ordered a couple of these instead at €7.69 (£6.62) each (can be bought with/without 4" flylead plug)

In the meantime, I used the car today (kids on half-term) but if needs be, I'll just use the spanner until the postman arrives.
