Title: X10 350 central stand removing
Post by: dado099 on April 10, 2018, 09:02:15
Hi guys,
I'v got problems trying to remove central stand (350 version).
I pulled away the two spring, I undid the nut of the central bolt, but the central bolt refuses to extract.
The problem is that the bolt end is hidden behind the oil radiator section and cannot be hammered straight away.
I tried to hammer in 45 degrees, but no success at all.
I think the only way is to remove the oil radiator, but I have to empty the engine oil.
Any suggestion please ?
Thanks in advance

My service manual has only this to say:

- Unscrew the nut and the pin* from the right side.
- Release the spring.
- Remove the centre stand.
- During refitting, tighten the nut to the specified torque.

Locking torques (N*m)
Centre stand bolt 40 to 45

* presume 'pin' means the bolt. Accompanying photo only shows bolt head and spring on the right side.

Can you rotate the bolt head on the right hand side?

Is this one of those where a long thin bolt goes through the pivot on the stand and a long hole through the crankcase similar to the 125 and 250 ones?
If so then it probably has the same problem of a seized bolt within the crankcase part. Rotating the bolt can result in it shearing off so heat and lots of penetrating oil and some brute force may be needed but remember you are hammering against the crankcase and you don't want to damage that, do you?? If you get it out, replace with a stainless steel one and lots of coppaslip.

Yes long bolt thru crankcase.

This is why service schedule says to oil it every 10,000 km.

Trying to find a diagram but was having terrible trouble getting anything out of the AJ Sutton web site, "your connection is not secure", "invalid site certificate" what's this b0110x?  :o

Bog off...

Anyway eventually got this page.

https://www.ajsutton.co.uk/genuineparts/18977/02.25/piaggio-x10-350-4t-4v-i-e-e3-2012-2012-2015/stand?uID=0 (https://www.ajsutton.co.uk/genuineparts/18977/02.25/piaggio-x10-350-4t-4v-i-e-e3-2012-2012-2015/stand?uID=0)

So it seems it pivots on a tube, which has an O-ring at each end, so trying to oil it from the outside ends won't do a lot will it?  :D

That's the problem they assemble it as if it should be full of grease with the o-rings to keep water out but they forget to put the grease on it. Bi-metal corrosion sets in as it doesn't even get a bit of water to keep it lubricated. The stand probably pivots on the bolt without the bolt turning so that what they want you to oil. Considering this design has been used on the leader motors since well before 2000 the problem with corrosion and stuck bolts has never been addressed and all it needs is a good smear of coppaslip.

When you get the bolt out, clean through the bore on the casing and also give the bolt a good clean and pump a load of grease (anything!) into the hole at the side the bolt inserts from so it is pushed through and gives the whole bolt a good coating when you refit it then this won't happen again.

In theory the tube with the O rings clamps solidly to the flanges of the stand and the whole lot rotates in the crankcase. In practise the tube, which as Dave says was probably never lubricated properly, seizes in the crankcase. once the bolt is loosened it should rotate inside the tube without too much brute force. Can you get an electric impact wrench on the head? I must admit that as mine was seized almost from new I decided to allow the stand to rotate on the through bolt and I used a second nut as a lock nut rather than tightening the bolt fully.

Thanks everybody,
The main bolt can be freely rotated on the head side, but it remain in place, also pulling with a strong grip.
Only solution is to hammer the end of the bolt, but this can't be done without removing oil radiator.
On next oil change I will remove oil radiator and hammer it until it unlocks.
I need to do this because when you put the bike off the stand it remains down, in spite of the strong return springs.
This is very dangerous !
Obviously I already put a lot of wd40, but non success.

Here is the exploded, to better understand how it works

Silly question time - how are you supporting the bike while working on the main stand to remove it?

Side stand !  :D

Presumably if the bolt rotates freely so does the centre stand when the bolt is loose. That is why I decided to leave it free to rotate and used an additional lock nut to stop it coming undone.

Yes.

I now think my blue one was like that, BUT it could rock sideways, which now suggests to me that the holes in the stand were wearing oval? Maybe?

It needs regular lubrication either to prevent it seizing or to prevent wear, possibly both.

Already tried your solution, but after some miles the hole on the stand got oval and when you put the bike on the stand it is very jerky and totally unsecure !  Very bad and and dangerous solution. Thanks anyway for the guess.
